and opening address by CA Department of Mental Health Director Steve
Mayberg, MD and CA Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs Chief Deputy
Director Michael Cunningham Participants will be able to describe 1)
one study of symptom origins and 2) one facility treating symptom
origins.

Innovative treatment: Psychiatrist/author Charles L. Whitfield, MD is in private practice in Atlanta, GA and
is a researcher and collaborator at the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention in Atlanta. Participants will be able to 1) give at least
two reasons for moving beyond palliative care and accurately
determining the underlying causes of mental health symptoms, 2)
describe one method for screening for substance abuse in individuals
with mental health symptoms in order to ensure that the client/patient
becomes abstinent before final assessment of underlying mental health
symptoms, 3) list one method for screening for underlying causes of
mental health symptoms, 4) give in writing two effective
evidence-based methods to assess and treat underlying causes of mental
health symptoms, and 5) briefly describe key
advantages/disadvantages in using various psychiatric drugs for trauma
survivors. (Some objectives be met in afternoon session) (2 hours CEs
for Psychologists; .5 hours MCLEs for Attorneys; and 2.5 for others)

sexual abuse and beyond: Findings from a series of international
extreme abuse surveys Psychologist Wanda Karriker, PhD, author of
Morning, Come Quickly, will present data on extreme abuse, which
increases risk factors for co-occurring disorders. Participants will be
able to list 1) three categories of traumatic events occurring in
extreme abuse, and 2) five sequelae of extreme abuse as observed by
surveyed therapists. (1.5 hours CE credits)

Innovative
treatment: Psychologist/author Randall Noblitt, PhD, professor at
Alliant International University, will join Dr. Whitfield in presenting
methods of treatment from his extensive experience treating patients
with severe mental health symptoms. Author Pam Perskin Noblitt will
address funding for individuals with severe mental health symptoms.
Participants will be able to describe 1) one innovative treatment
modality for victims of extreme abuse, 2) one improvement in submitting
SSA forms, and 3) one advantage of developing a trauma- informed,
trauma-specific model program, 4) two toxic effects of psychiatric
drugs, and 5) how psychiatric drugs can be traumatic instead of
helpful. (2.5 hours CE credits; 2.0 hours MCLEs for Attorneys)
